About |
|
|
Thrillingly unpredictable! From her wildly eclectic musical choices (ranging from French Canadian folk, to Vivaldi, to Klezmer), to the casual and conversational tone of her original, funky dance vocabulary-Aszure Barton’s movement is joyful, exuberant, sassy, playful and quirky, and like nothing else you’ve ever seen before. Her work possesses wonderful musicality – Mikhail Baryshnikov once compared it to that of the young Mark Morris-and her athletic and dramatic dancers own the movement so completely that it appears they are orchestrating the music as they dance. Music and movement are one, and audiences blissfully surrender.
Barton’s choreography draws on a wide range of sources from classical ballet and contemporary dance. Using idiosyncratic movements to paint a psychological portrait, she conjures up humor, cacophony, and pathos and reveals the rich, dynamic landscape of the human psyche. Her creative process celebrates music and movement, and a love for collaboration with dancers, filmmakers, designers, photographers and musicians. Barton continues to develop critically acclaimed productions around the globe. Her works have toured to Europe, North and South America, Asia, Africa and Australia.

BUSK
The word busk comes from the Spanish root word buscar, meaning “to seek. Buskers literally seek the fantasy of fame and fortune. Busk begins with one dancer searching for artistic validation and discovering comfort in unity. By celebrating their bizarre, wondrous lives as performing artists, the dancers explore the sources of self worth; external group praise or internal affirmation. With original and evocative music by Russian composer Lev Ljova Zhurbin along with a wonderful selection of world sound, Busk retains Aszure Barton’s signature style of precise whole-body expression inflected with an intense and intimate awareness of the thin line between humor and sadness
BLUE SOUP
Aszure Barton creates dense settings in which each player is an individual and yet all are united by a common language. Blue Soup is a collection drawn from Barton's notable past creations. Defying the idea of dance as simple spectacle, this robust work invites the audience to visit a self-contained, deeply textured and absurd universe of bright joy and dark humor. Blue Soup is an autobiographical work celebrating a partnership between movement and music that offers an entire world full of surprise.
