Making their first ever tour to the United States, CCN Ballet de Lorraine is one of the most important companies working in Europe, performing contemporary creations while retaining and programming a rich and extensive repertory, spanning our modern history, made up of works by some of our generations most highly regarded choreographers.

Since acquiring the CCN title in 1999, the Centre Chorégraphique National - Ballet de Lorraine has dedicated itself to supporting contemporary choreographic creation, performing master works by legendary choreographers as well as today's most innovative French dance makers. As of July 2011 the organization is under the general and artistic direction of Petter Jacobsson.

The CCN functions as an art center and venue for multiple possibilities in the fields of research, experimentation and artistic creation. It is a platform open to many different disciplines, a space where the many visions of dance of today may meet.

CCN Ballet de Lorraine's debut 2017 USA tour will feature master works by Merce Cunningham and William Forsythe as well as works by France's younger generation of choreographers. Program will be selected from the following repertory:

: Merce Cunningham
Music: David Tudor (Untitled 1975/1994)
Undoubtedly one of Cunningham’s most beloved works by audiences and critics alike, Sounddance was created upon his return from a nine week project with the Paris Opera Ballet in 1973. Back with his own dancers, he created a work in opposition to ballet’s uniformity and unison. He choreographed a fast and vigorous organized chaos with the stage divided by a gracefully draped plush gold curtain, designed by artist Mark Lancaster. Musician and composer David Tudor's powerful and driving score provides the perfect energetic accompaniment to Cunningham’s fast paced choreography.

Merce Cunningham
Music: Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta
According to Cunningham, the title has to do with the two meanings of the verb “to fabricate”: combining elements to create a whole, and inventing or concocting something, even lying. The ordering of the phrases and the number of dancers performing each phrase are determined randomly. The length of each phrase is constant, but the phrases may overlap. With this structure and despite the absence of narrative content, Fabrications nonetheless manifests a strong dramatic and melancholy dimension. The music, Short Waves 1985, by the Brazilian composer Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta, is an electronic composition on tape, combined with shortwave radio frequencies.

HOK solo pour ensemble

Choreography: Alban Richard
Music: Louis Andriessen
For his creation at the CCN – Ballet de Lorraine, Richard has created a "solo for the ensemble" - with the dancers’ bodies forming a unique, polymorphous mass. Closely bonded to Louis Andriessen’s music, HOK, solo pour ensemble is a work driven by a ferocious energy, its rhythm charging from body to body.

Cecilia Bengolea &
François Chaignaud
Music: Philip Glass
“We composed a piece full of long lines, and spins - using dance hall and ballet steps. We seek to create a continuity between the classical and modern, past and today, drawing fleeting lines toward the past and speculating about the future.”
- Cecilia Bengolea & François Chaignaud
