Since its founding in 1955, Houston Ballet has gone on to achieve international acclaim, and is now America’s fourth largest ballet company. Its 54 dancers include artists who have won gold and silver medals at major international ballet competitions. The New York Times has hailed Houston Ballet as "one of the nation’s best ballet companies."
Houston Ballet has toured extensively both nationally and internationally including appearances in London, Moscow, Spain, Montréal, Washington, D.C., and New York. Houston Ballet has emerged as a leader in creating and developing new full-length narrative ballets.
Ben Stevenson, a former member of Britain’s Royal Ballet served as artistic director from 1976-2003, establishing a core of permanent choreographers whose works have greatly enriched the company’s repertory. In 2003, the acclaimed Australian choreographer Stanton Welch assumed leadership of the company. Mr. Welch, who has created ballets for many of the world's leading companies, has choreographed thirteen works especially for Houston Ballet.
