RENA SHAGAN ASSOCIATES, INC
Created in 1979 to provide management for a small group of companies touring in the United States and abroad, RENA SHAGAN ASSOCIATES, INC. (RSA) has grown to become one of the leading arts management firms in the world. RSA specializes in developing and managing touring activity for dance and theatre companies. Some of the companies we work with presently include Pina Bausch Tanztheater Wuppertal, The Forsythe Company, Royal Ballet of Flanders, Conny Janssen Danst, Martha Graham Dance Company, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and the work of four MacArthur genius fellows, Susan Marshall, Meredith Monk, Elizabeth Streb and Trisha Brown.

RSA's philosophy is to serve its artists on a one-on-one basis, nurturing their creative process, representing their best interests, and collaborating on how to market their work. RSA also works closely and values its relationships with presenters, intentionally remaining small so as to maintain personal relationships with a high standard of honesty, integrity, and efficiency.

Recognizing that limited support for the performing arts requires a proactive approach to finding both commissioning and touring funds, RSA creatively and successfully pursues grant opportunities and financial support from government, foundations and individual presenting organizations on behalf of its artists.

RSA continues to be a leader in bringing international dance and theatre companies to the U.S. In the 2009- 2010 season, RSA welcomes work from international artists representing eight different companies. Our international roster includes Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, England’s AandBC Company, New Zealand’s Black Grace, and The Netherlands' Conny Janssen Danst.
RSA personnel maintain a high profile nationally and internationally attending performances, festivals, and conferences and contributing to the field by serving on the boards of ISPA, WAA, Dance/USA, NAPAMA and the American Arts Alliance as well as serving as panelists for the National Endowment for the Arts, regional and state arts agencies.

RSA President Rena Shagan has written the “bible” on booking and tour management, which is used by Arts Administrators in North America and as far away as China, BOOKING AND TOUR MANAGEMENT FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, published by Allworth Press

RENA SHAGAN HONORED WITH
DANCE/USA TRUSTEES AWARD
The Dance/USA Trustees Award is given at the discretion of the Board of Trustees to recognize an outstanding professional whose work has special significance to the field and, in this case, to Dance/USA. Rena Shagan was recognized for her outstanding contribution to the creation and growth of Dance/USA at the National Performing Arts Conference Dance/USA meeting in Denver this past June 2008. In presenting the award, Dance/USA cited Rena Shagan’s service to the field as chair of the committee and task force that created Dance/USA. In that role, Ms. Shagan led her colleagues in defining relevant goals, programs, services, and constituencies necessary to create a national service organization that would support the rise of the national dance community.

"This book has the 'smarts' you need to survive and thrive in the touring marketplace. It asks the right questions and guides you to the answers that will work for you."
-Ivan Sygoda, Director, Pentacle

"Demystify booking and increase your touring profits. This book provides anyone going on the road with the know-how for success. It guides you step by step through the questions you need to ask yourself and describes what materials you'll need, how the booking process works, what responsibilities a manager assumes during a tour and how to accomplish administrative follow-up. You'll find all the down-to-earth information you need about setting fees, achieving financial goals, capturing new presenters and turning a booking into a tour."
- Association of Performing Arts Presenters

Author Rena Shagan reveals the secrets of more than 20 years' experience on how to book performances, organize tours, and succeed on the road as a performing artist. Booking and Tour Management for the Performing Arts is the most comprehensive handbook ever assembled about booking performances and organizing and managing tours. Shagan takes you inside the performing arts industry to demystify the give-and-take of buyers and sellers in this highly competitive field, mapping out a detailed plan of action that shows solo artists and performing groups how to:

* Turn a single booking into a tour
* Prepare a sound budget for touring
* Target prospective bookings
* Create promotional materials that sell
* Survive and thrive on the road

A section of special chapters by top-notch experts gives inside information on how to crack the university scene and what it's like to go abroad. And successful touring artists share their personal experiences about what it's like to go out on the road. Originally published as The Road Show, this newly revised edition contains an invaluable new chapter, "Trends for the Future," which delves into the notable shifts and changes in the evolving marketplace. Booking and Tour Management for the Performing Arts is an indispensable guide for helping solo artists and performing groups in music, theater and dance develop the skills they need to compete in this rough-and-tumble arena.

Rena Shagan is President of Rena Shagan Associates, Inc., a New York City-based marketer of performing arts companies for touring in the United States and abroad. She has been a frequent consultant and lecturer on booking and tour management techniques to organizations nationwide, including the Los Angeles Music Center and Ballet Theatre Foundation.
